The whole family is reassured and delighted. With the tree decorated, the contemplative Christmas mood returns. While it is nice and warm, bright and cozy inside, darkness descends over the world outside in a flurry of snow. Holly looks out of the window and wonders whether there will be enough snow tomorrow to go sledging with her brother on Christmas Day morning. Karl had been nagging her about it for days.
He wasn't allowed to go sledging on his own yet and the neighbor's children, with whom Karl usually went sledging, had gone on vacation to Gran Canaria over the Christmas break. And Holly had to admit to herself that she was looking forward to tobogganing despite her initial protests.
It would certainly be fun, especially so close to Christmas. She stares into the darkness for a while and reminisces about old childhood memories of exciting adventures in the snow and forest.
With these thoughts, she finally goes to bed and falls asleep immediately. When Holly wakes up on Christmas morning, she runs straight to the window and looks out.
"Yes, finally!" she says to herself, wondering a little about the childlike joy she feels when she sees the thick blanket of snow. She immediately storms into Karl's room. He has to see this! After breakfast, Holly first wraps herself up warm and then immediately packs up her old sledge and Karl and runs with him to the hill next to her house at the edge of the forest. The powder snow glistens in the sun and makes the fir trees and snowdrifts look like something out of a fairy tale.
